“MIDDLE SCHOOL SPORTS MATTER”
Middle school athletes work just as hard as high schoolers. It’s time they competed for something that matters.
For too long, middle school sports have been overlooked. High schools have state championships, national rankings, and recognition for their athletes. Middle schools have had none of that — until now.
The National Federation of Middle School Sports is an independent nonprofit organization serving middle school athletics. NFMSS is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or operated by the National Federation of State High School Associations unless otherwise stated through a formal partnership. The National Federation of Middle School Sports (NFMSS) is the first organization dedicated exclusively to giving 6th–8th grade student-athletes a real competitive pathway: from local and regional play all the way to State and National Championship Games.
NFMSS believes middle school athletics should be an extension of the educational experience. Our programs are designed to support academic achievement, character development, leadership, teamwork, sportsmanship, and positive school culture. NFMSS is committed to safe competition for middle school student-athletes. Member schools, coaches, and event organizers are expected to follow health, safety, supervision, emergency action, and risk-reduction standards appropriate for middle school athletics. NFMSS establishes competition standards, event procedures, roster requirements, eligibility guidelines, sportsmanship expectations, and championship qualification procedures for participating middle school programs. NFMSS expects all student-athletes, coaches, parents, spectators, officials, and administrators to demonstrate respect, integrity, self-control, and good sportsmanship before, during, and after competition.
NFMSS is committed to developing, recruiting, and supporting qualified officials for middle school athletics. Officials play a critical role in ensuring fair play, safety, consistency, and integrity across all NFMSS competitions. Middle school athletes are still developing physically, emotionally, socially, and academically. NFMSS supports age-appropriate competition that builds confidence, discipline, resilience, teamwork, and school pride while protecting the well-being of young student-athletes. NFMSS collects participation data, team results, rankings, and student-athlete recognition information to increase visibility for middle school athletics and help schools, families, and communities celebrate student achievement. NFMSS supports athletic directors and school administrators with registration tools, calendars, roster management, event information, championship procedures, professional development, and ongoing communication. As a nonprofit organization, NFMSS exists to expand opportunity, increase recognition, support school-based athletics, and create pathways for middle school student-athletes regardless of background, geography, or school size.

This Is Historic
NFMSS is the first federation to license middle school sports nationally. Your school has the opportunity to be part of building something that middle school athletes across the country have never had before. At NFMSS, we believe middle school sports are not just about the scoreboard. They are about shaping young people at one of the most important stages of their lives.
Every practice, every game, every championship, and every team experience should help students become more disciplined, more confident, more respectful, and more prepared for the future.
That is the foundation of the NFMSS philosophy.
