NFMSS Safety Commitment

The National Federation of Middle School Sports is committed to protecting the health, safety, and welfare of all student-athletes, coaches, officials, spectators, volunteers, and staff participating in NFMSS-sanctioned activities. This Emergency Action Plan establishes standardized emergency response procedures for all sanctioned practices, competitions, tournaments, camps, clinics, and state championship events.

NFMSS Safety PhilosophyNFMSS believes that student-athlete safety is the highest priority. All athletic programs, competitions, and sanctioned events must maintain safe playing environments, emergency preparedness standards, proper supervision, medical readiness, risk management procedures, and compliance with all local and state safety laws.

All NFMSS member schools, coaches, event operators, officials, volunteers, and administrators are expected to review, understand, and implement these emergency procedures at every sanctioned event.

Every venue must maintain a written, venue-specific Emergency Action Plan.

  • Identify emergency personnel and assign clear roles
  • Provide accessible emergency contact information at all events
  • Maintain accessible emergency equipment on site
  • Identify and post AED locations throughout the venue
  • Ensure clear emergency vehicle access routes at all times
  • Conduct annual EAP reviews before each season
  • Conduct emergency rehearsal drills with all event staff
  • Maintain documented emergency communication procedures

Role Responsibilities

๐Ÿฉบ Medical Personnel Certified athletic trainers, EMTs, paramedics, physicians, or other qualified medical personnel. First responders for all medical emergencies.
๐Ÿ“‹ Coaches & Staff Assisting with crowd control, student supervision, and emergency communication. Must know their assigned role before each event.
๐Ÿ”’ Security Personnel Securing emergency access routes and managing crowds. Controlling entry and exit during emergencies.

For any serious injury or medical emergency during a sanctioned event, follow this immediate response protocol:

  • 5Do not move injured athletes unless they are in immediate danger
  • 6Follow concussion and cardiac protocols as applicable

Sudden Cardiac Arrest Response โ€” Act Immediately:
  • 1Activate EMS โ€” Call 911 immediately
  • 2Begin CPR โ€” do not wait for the AED to arrive
  • 3Send someone to retrieve the nearest AED immediately

Heat Safety Requirements:
  • Monitor weather and heat index conditions before and during all outdoor events
  • Provide mandatory hydration breaks every 20โ€“30 minutes
  • Ensure proper acclimatization periods for all athletes
  • Modify or cancel practices and events during excessive heat conditions
  • Monitor all athletes continuously for heat illness symptoms

Emergency Heat Illness Response:

All schools and event operators are required to conduct annual training and review to maintain NFMSS event sanctioning.

  • Train designated personnel in CPR and AED procedures โ€” maintain current certifications
  • Review all venue-specific emergency procedures and confirm AED locations
  • Ensure all staff understand their individual emergency roles and responsibilities

CPR/AED Certification RecommendedCPR/AED certification is strongly recommended for all coaches, athletic directors, and event staff. Courses are available through the American Red Cross, American Heart Association, and NFHS.
