The National Federation of Middle School Sports (NFMSS) was created to bring structure, recognition, accountability, and opportunity to middle school athletics across the United States. As an organization serving schools, student-athletes, families, coaches, sponsors, and community partners, NFMSS is committed to operating with professionalism, integrity, transparency, and responsible governance.
Nonprofit Status and Organizational Structure
The National Federation of Middle School Sports (NFMSS) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization operating under In Time of Need, Inc. NFMSS is a registered trademark with the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO).
NFMSS exists to support the development, organization, recognition, and advancement of middle school athletics while helping schools and communities create safer, more structured, and more meaningful athletic experiences for students in grades 6–8.
Governance and Internal Compliance
NFMSS maintains internal bylaws, governance policies, youth safety policies, school membership procedures, event participation requirements, compliance documents, and operating standards to help protect student-athletes, schools, families, coaches, staff, volunteers, sponsors, and partners.
These internal documents guide how NFMSS manages school membership, event approvals, championship operations, student-athlete participation, conduct expectations, safety procedures, media permissions, sponsorship relationships, and organizational accountability.
Youth Safety and Student-Athlete Protection
NFMSS is committed to creating an athletic environment that prioritizes student safety, adult accountability, and responsible participation. NFMSS maintains policies related to youth protection, parent/guardian consent, media release permissions, concussion acknowledgment, return-to-play procedures, roster certification, background checks, coach conduct, spectator conduct, and event incident reporting.
NFMSS expects all participating schools, coaches, athletic directors, parents, guardians, volunteers, staff members, and event partners to follow applicable NFMSS policies and event requirements.
School Membership and Event Participation
NFMSS membership and event participation are designed for schools, approved teams, authorized school representatives, and eligible middle school student-athletes. Certain forms, agreements, rosters, waivers, eligibility documents, and internal approval materials are private and are made available only to approved schools, authorized representatives, or approved partners.
NFMSS may review, approve, deny, suspend, or revoke school membership, team participation, event registration, or championship eligibility when necessary to protect the integrity, safety, and standards of the organization.
Public Documents and Document Requests
NFMSS values transparency while also protecting student privacy, organizational operations, legal documents, internal procedures, and confidential information.
Public documents are available upon request as required by law. Certain documents may be restricted, internal, confidential, or shared only with approved schools, sponsors, partners, auditors, attorneys, grant funders, or authorized representatives.
